French

One of the most widely spoken languages in the world is French. It is a primary or official language not just in France, but also in parts of Belgium, Switzerland, Monaco, and Canada, most notably but not exclusively in Quebec.

It is also extensively spoken in north and west Africa, Lebanon, and portions of southeast Asia, primarily in former French colonies.

It is considered to be the second most extensively used foreign language in international communications, after English, and is an official or primary second language in 55 different nations throughout the world.

French is a second or native language for around 300 million people.

The official language of the International Postal Union, the International Olympic Committee, the International Red Cross, and other organizations until the early twentieth century was French.

It is now one of the six official languages of the United Nations and one of the two official languages, along with English, of those organizations.

The Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey have made it an official language as well.
