Foreign Medical Graduate Examination
(FMGE)
It is a compulsory exam for those Indians who have a foreign medical degree and want to obtain a licence to practise medicine in India on or after 15/03/2002. FMGE is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in India.
Eligibility:
Citizenship:
- Candidates must be an Indian or Overseas Citizens of India (OCI).
Primary Medical Qualification:
- Candidates must possess MBBS or equivalent awarded by a medical institution outside India.
- The qualification must be recognized by the concerned medical regulatory authority in the country where the institution is located.
Recognition and Confirmation:
- MBBS or equivalent qualification must be approved by the Indian Embassy of the country where the medical institution is located. For practising medicine in that country it is essential to ensure the validity of qualification.
Cut-off Date for Qualification:
- Candidates must have completed their MBBS or equivalent qualification whose final examination result must be declared on or before the cut-off date for a particular session of the FMGE.
Eligibility Certificate (for certain cases):
- Candidates who have got their MBBS or equivalent qualification from a country where the degree is not recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI) or the concerned State Medical Council must obtain an Eligibility Certificate from the MCI before appearing for the FMGE.
FMGE Exam Pattern:
Mode/Month of Exam:
- Computer-based test (CBT).
- Conducted twice a year: June & December.
Number of Papers:
- The exam is divided into two parts: Paper 1 ( pre & para clinical subjects ) and Paper 2 ( clinical subjects ).
- Both papers are conducted on the same day.
Number of Questions:
- Total of 300 multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
- Each paper contains 150 questions.
Duration:
- Each paper is of 2.5 hours (150 minutes) duration.
- There is a scheduled break between the two papers.
Question Type:
- All questions are single best answer type (MCQs) with four options.
Marking Scheme:
- Each correct answer is awarded one mark.
- There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.
Qualifying Marks:
- Candidates need to score at least 150 out of 300 to pass the examination.
Language:
- The question paper is in English.

Important Points:
- Admit Card: Candidates must download their admit card from the NBE website before the exam and bring it along with a valid ID proof to the exam center.

- Re-evaluation: There is no provision for re-evaluation or re-checking of the answer sheets.
- On clearing the exam: Candidates receive a certificate, which is required for registration with the MCI or State Medical Council.

- Senior Secondary Marksheet
- Certificate of Matriculation for date of birth proof
- Internship Certificate (if done from abroad)
- Primary degree equivalent to MBBS pass certified by Indian Embassy
- Passport of applicants
- Two recent photographs
- If a required copy of failed certificates
- Address proof (one from PAN card, Voter ID, Driving License, or Passport)
- Equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities
